Sequencing the Entangled DNA of Fractional Quantum Hall Fluids
We introduce and prove the "root theorem", which establishes a condition for
families of operators to annihilate all root states associated with zero modes
of a given positive semi-definite -body Hamiltonian chosen from a large
class. This class is motivated by fractional quantum Hall and related problems,
and features generally long-ranged, one-dimensional, dipole-conserving terms.
Our theorem streamlines analysis of zero-modes in contexts where "generalized"
or "entangled" Pauli principles apply. One major application of the theorem is
to parent Hamiltonians for mixed Landau-level wave functions, such as
unprojected composite fermion or parton-like states that were recently
discussed in the literature, where it is difficult to rigorously establish a
complete set of zero modes with traditional polynomial techniques. As a simple
application we show that a modified pseudo-potential, obtained via
retention of only half the terms, stabilizes the Tao-Thouless state
as the unique densest ground state.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure

The Development of Security Community in Croatia: Leading the Pack
Of the former Yugoslav republics, Croatia is in an enviable position. After years of difficult reforms and restructuring, its efforts are paying off. The country recently assumed a seat on the UN Security Council, it joined NATO and there is an expectation of forthcoming EU membership. Through these steps, the country has begun to integrate into the well-established Euro-Atlantic community. This article explores the depths of this integration through the theoretical lens of security community. We draw conclusions regarding security community in Croatia to provide lessons for NATO’s New Strategic Concept. Ultimately, we argue that NATO must remember that there remain security concerns in the European neighborhood, even in apparent successes like Croatia
A gravitational wave window on extra dimensions
We report on the possibility of detecting a submillimetre-sized extra
dimension by observing gravitational waves (GWs) emitted by pointlike objects
orbiting a braneworld black hole. Matter in the `visible' universe can generate
a discrete spectrum of high frequency GWs with amplitudes moderately weaker
than the predictions of general relativity (GR), while GW signals generated by
matter on a `shadow' brane hidden in the bulk are potentially strong enough to
be detected using current technology. We know of no other astrophysical
phenomena that produces GWs with a similar spectrum, which stresses the need to
develop detectors capable of measuring this high-frequency signature of large
extra dimensions.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

Impact of storage competition on energy markets
We study how storage, operating as a price maker within a market environment, may be optimally operated over an extended period of time. The optimality criterion may be the maximisation of the profit of the storage itself, where this profit results from the exploitation of the differences in market clearing prices at different times. Alternatively it may be the minimisation of the cost of generation, or the maximisation of consumer surplus or social welfare. In all cases there is calculated for each successive time-step the cost function measuring the total impact of whatever action is taken by the storage. The succession of such cost functions provides the information for the storage to determine how to behave over time, forming the basis of the appropriate optimisation problem.
We study particularly competition between multiple stores, where the objective of each store is to maximise its own income given the activities of the remainder. We show that, at the Cournot Nash equilibrium, multiple stores which between them have market impact collectively erode their own abilities to make profits: essentially each store attempts to increase its own profit over time by overcompeting at the expense of the remainder. We quantify this for linear price functions.
We give examples throughout based on electricity storage and Great Britain electricity spot-price market data
